Phoenix Contact pools business from smart services and cloud technology

February 4, 2020

As of January 1, 2020, Phoenix Contact has pooled its digital service portfolio in Phoenix Contact Smart Business GmbH, its new subsidiary in Berlin. It encompasses all activities around cloud technology, data analytics, and software services.

The former Berlin startup SmartB Energy Management GmbH, in which the Phoenix Contact corporate venture capital company acquired an interest in 2017 and most recently owned 100 percent, will be merged into this new company. All of the business activity around cloud technologies in the IMA (Industry Management and Automation) business sector, which is headquartered in Bad Pyrmont, will be relocated to the new company.

It will supply software services for the entire Group in the fields of development, operations, and sales: Software-as-a-Service. The incorporated company will have a team of 22 employees and act as the data science center of excellence for the Phoenix Contact Group. Mathias Weßelmann, who until now has supervised cloud engineering in the Automation Systems Business Unit, will be the General Manager.

Cloud-based services based on the Internet of Things enables users to gain an overview of the status of their application anywhere and at any time. Using various algorithms for forecasting, optimizing, and controlling, energy management can be made more efficient, system downtime reduced, and system availability increased.
